【The English Sermon】"Learn from the Lord Jesus” Matthew 11:28-30 on May 30, 2021

"Learn from the Lord Jesus”

Matthew 11:28-30

English Sermon delivered by Rev. Sakae Tomokawa on May 30, 2021

Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) At Tajiri Church, we have communion every first Sunday of the month, and this verse is often read at communion. I had preached on this verse about four years ago, but I was astonished by the depth of this verse again.

The Moffatt translation of "rest" is "I will refresh you. I will refresh you." It's not just "rest. You will be refreshed again. Williams translates "I will let you rest" as “I, yes, I will lead into rest," which is faithful to the original. It's a good idea to use the word "I" in the original. In other words, the Lord Jesus will give us new strength. It is not something that you can attain by yourself through discipline or study. The next words are, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble" (verse 29).

E.H.Peterson boldly translates this passage as follows; “Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.” Note the words, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me”. A yoke is something you put around the neck of your livestock when you plow the fields. The Lord Jesus will take the yoke with us. We are not to live as we please. The Lord Jesus is with us to help us. We must also remember that we have friends in the faith who will walk with us in our faith. We must cherish the friends who sometimes point out our mistakes, and the friends who are there for us when we are grieving and accept our sorrow as if it were their own. The "fellowship of the saints" means such a deep fellowship. Furthermore, I don't think he forgot for a moment that the Lord Jesus even gave up his life on the cross. The same goes for what the Lord Jesus said after washing the disciples' feet, "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34).

But the disciples abandoned the Lord Jesus when they were about to face the cross. In the end, human beings love themselves. But the compassion of the Lord Jesus is far greater than human egoism. He resurrected and made his disciples vessels to preach the "gospel of God. The disciples are our spokespersons. Therefore, we should come back to the Lord Jesus again and again, bear His yoke, and continue to learn from Him. Even if we encounter difficulties, trials, and sorrows, we should live with gratitude.

「主イエスに学べ」　

マタイによる福音書１１章２８～３０節

　「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。」（マタイ１１章２８節）田尻教会では聖餐式を毎月の第一日曜日に行っているが、聖餐式でよく読まれるのがこの御言葉である。この御言葉は４年ほど前に説教を行っているが、今回もこの御言葉の深さに驚愕させられた。

「休み」を（Moffatt訳）は「I will refresh you」と訳している。単なる「休み」ではない。再び新たにしていただくのだ。リフレッシュしていただくのだ。それに「休ませてあげよう」は（Williams訳）は「I, yes, I will lead you into rest」と原文忠実に訳す。原文は「このわたしが」と「わたし」を強調しているのだ。つまり主イエスだけが新たな力を与えて下さるのだ。自分で修練を重ねて到達するものでは無い。次に「わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから、わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい」（２９節）と続く。

「わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい」に留意したい。主イエスが共に軛を担って下さるのだ。自分の好き勝手に生きて行くのではない。主イエスが共にいて下さるのだ。また、信仰を共に歩んでくれる信仰の仲間がいることも忘れてはいけない。時には過ちを指摘してくれる友や、悲嘆の只中にある時に、ただ傍にいて悲しみを受け止めてくれる友を大切にしなければいけない。「聖徒の交わり」とはそれ程深い。

E.H.Petersonは「わたしと共に歩み、わたしと共に働け――わたしが如何に為しているかを見よ。恵みの自然なリズムを学べ。」と大胆に訳す。つまり、キリス者とは主イエスの御許に幾度も立ち戻り、主イエスの軛を負い、主イエスの恵みに学び続ける群れなのだ。「わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから」とあるが、弟子たちは主イエスが最後の晩餐を摂る前に弟子たちの足を洗ったことを忘れなかっただろう。いや、更に主イエスが十字架で命まで捨てて下さったことを一時も忘れることはなかったと思う。主イエスが「わたしがあなたがたを愛したように、あなたがたも互いに愛し合いなさい」（ヨハネ１３：３４）も同じだ。

だが、弟子たちは十字架を目前にした時、主イエスを見捨てたのだ。人間は最後には自分が可愛いのだ。しかし、主イエスの慈しみは人間のエゴイズムを遥かに超えて大きい。復活して主イエスは弟子たちをして「神の愛」を伝える器としたのだ。だから、わたしたちも主イエスの御許に幾度も立ち戻り、主イエスの軛を負い、主イエスに学び続けて歩んで行きたい。たとえ困難なことや試練や悲しみなどに遭遇しようとも、感謝しながら生きて行きたい。
